I gave this book away as a christmas gift to a friend who loves maps. Yes, I didn’t know there were people who were map lovers and that there were stores dedicated to maps. If you have a friend with such a habit, don’t hesitate to buy this book.

I thought this was a fun and simultaneously informative series of maps. They are all in color. They cover nine general topics: “People and Populations,” “Politics, Power, and Religion,” “Culture and Customs,” “Friends and Enemies,” “Geography,” “History,” “National Security,” “Crime and Punishment,” and “Nature.”My favorite specific maps are:• Pages 32 – 33: Every Country’s Highest-Valued Export. The United States is in the category of “Food / Drink.” By the classical 18th or 19th century definition of colonialism, that means we are a colony of China, Japan, and the EU.• Pages 94 – 95: Zone Rouge – an area of France so badly damaged during WW I that people were forbidden to live there.• Pages 108 -109: Mercator projection vs true size of countries.• Page 114: The 20 largest islands of the world compared.• Page 115: The Pan-American Highway – the longest road in the world.• Pages 120 – 121: The world is a mirror. The map shows the world as mirror image of what we are accustomed to seeing on a world map. Weird!• Page 136: Colonial Africa on the eve of World War I.• Page 137: Map of the entire internet as of December 1969. There were only four places connected together: UCLA Network Measurement Center in Los Angeles, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Palo Alto, UC Santa Barbara Culler - Fried Mathematics Center, and University of Utah School of Computing.• Page 142: When Britain was connected to continental Europe in 16 000 BCE.• Page 158: If European borders were drawn by DNA instead of ethnicity.• Page 160: Historical vs present geographical distribution of lions in Africa and Asia.

Great book for kids and fun for adults to read as well! 10 yr old enjoys it. A lot of pointers in the book to make kids curious to ask questions and find more.

Maps of the world illustrating interesting facts. For example, instead of listing plug types by country, the plug types are illustrated on a world map. What's not to love?Here is a list for starters: maps break in the middle across two pages, so it is hard to see what if going on; hard to differentiate colors on the key; some maps get a tad "political"; several inaccuracies, including Israel being randomly put somewhere else in the Middle East.Also, we see examples of very bad maps, for example "Countries That Don't Use the Metric System". This map highlights three unnamed "countries" including a blob in Africa that doesn't actually correspond to an actual country or countries. What an amazing book! I bought this on a whim and I am so glad I did! Because the book is full of short and interesting facts, it is a quick read. I keep our copy in the bathroom so you can learn a little bit each time you need to use the bathroom. The book is divided into sections based on the subject content and each page or two depicts the geographical map of the area discussed with superimposed graphs, facts and appropriate legends. I'm definitely going to purchase this as a gift for my friends who are lovers of maps and trivia.
