Not for the weak...

If you follow the workouts in this book you WILL get into the greatest shape of your life! Stew Smith lays out an extraordinary workout program in this book. You will not need a gym membership, weight set in your basement, or any other expensive equipment. The only thing you need is swimming gear and running gear, and you probably already have that stuff. Oh wait, you will also need determination and a positive attitude because you will be pushing yourself to your limits.I have been doing modified versions of Stews workouts with my oldest son. We will start using the "12 weeks to BUD/S" workout next week after he graduates from High School and we can coordinate our schedules to get these grueling workouts in every day. His plan is to become a Navy SEAL after he graduates from college. I was a Navy diver a long time ago and my plan is to just get into great shape because I am getting older and I still have three younger sons to keep up with after my oldest leaves the nest. It gets harder every year...The modified versions of Stews workouts we have been using vary day to day. We normally go hit the Appalachian trail (which is close to our home) and run on the trails. We get in a good stretch, then start running. We hit numerous places on the trail to stop and workout. The workout is so much better with a great view! We will do pushups, pullups, 8 count body builders, mountainclimbers, sit ups, etc. Then we start running again until we hit our next workout spot. We normally run a minimum of 5 miles and stop for workouts 5 or 6 times. Other days we hit the lake and go swimming. The book lightly covers nutrition. By that I mean it does not give detailed meal plans, but rather gives general guidelines for nutrition. The general guidelines mention things like don't eat fried chicken, instead eat skinless chicken breasts, or use more healthy oils like canola or olive oil instead of vegetable shortening. His general guidelines are good, but nutrition could easily fill up 4 or 5 books on its own. So if you were not aware that fried chicken or vegetable shortening was a poor choice, you should probably pick up a sports nutrition book like The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition or Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook. The nutrition aspect of this workout is important. If you follow Stews workout you will be burning huge amounts of calories and will be eating more. I have increased my portions at each meal, snack on almonds and fruit all day, and still lost a few pounds. The big changes are when I step onto my bodyfat scale and I can see my bodyfat and visceral fat going down while my muscle mass increases. I am not sure how many calories I am taking in each day, but it is a lot, and I am still seeing great progress due to the tough workouts. Plus I feel fantastic. This book has a lot of value if your goal is to get into good enough shape to become a Navy SEAL, or a member of any Specwar outfit. It also has great value if your goal is to just get into fantastic physical condition. The workouts in this book will require some commitment and dedication if you plan on completing them. But if your goal is to be in great shape, thats an easy trade-off and in my opinion well worth it.

Follow it exactly

Bought this book for my son. He worked on his own and passed his PST, and joined the Navy SWCCC program. His SEAL mentor recommended this book and my son pretty much followed it to the letter, nutrition advice and all. His PST score improved dramatically and keep in mind he was in pretty good shape to pass it in the first place. The variation of routines was great, and it was all explained well. I've used some of the things from it, and it about 8 weeks I've gone from not being able to run 1/2 mile to running 3 miles and I am OLD. My overall level of fitness is up to. My son loaned his copy of the book to a friend to prep for Marine basic, so I'm buying my own copy of the book. You won't look like a body builder. My son has several friends who hit the weights hard, and when you look at them all together, you would definitely say my son could kick the weight lifter's tails. Hard to describe really, but it's a look of total overall fitness. Awesome book, so awesome, I'm buying two...

Good info

Pretty good information in Stewart Smith's book here. I will say, however, that if you do not have a water source for swimming, you are going to be missing out quite a bit.IF (and only "IF"), you are not looking to join the Navy SeALs, you could, find much of the same online for free. For example, [...] is loaded with an articles section. Ross' inexpensive and self published books entitled "Never Gymless" (very little equipment) and "Infinite Intensity" (dumbbells and such) are superior, in my opinion. That's not really a knock on Stewart Smith's, just a couple of books that I would recommend over this if you are looking to get in shape rather than looking to become a SeAL.

Comprehensive, detailed, EXCELLENT!!

This workout book is one of the best overall workout books I've ever read. I've been working out pretty regularly for the last 14 years and have done a lot of different programs and read a lot of books. This one really stands out as one of the best. It is detailed, smart (telling you how to avoid common injuries) practical, it works, and it has an element of "fun" to it in that it tells you EXACTLY the measures you need to take to become a Navy SEAL, who you can contact, some history of the Navy SEALs, minimum requirements, preparing yourself mentally, advice for moving through BUD/s training, nutrition advice, swimming techniques, running advice, all of it QUALITY. It is NOT a hastily thrown together guide to capitalize on the growing popularity of SEALs. It is a GREAT guide that I think can apply to anyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience. This book has it all, and includes a DVD, which for me, greatly helped my swimming technique. I HIGHLY recommend this book!! An all-in-one resource for anyone interested in fitness.

Exercise, nourishment and recovery explained very well!

This book is a great guide that describes numerous exercises for the entire body. The book is very specific and will tell you exactly what to do for body nourishment and how to recover from exercise. Specifically, I started swimming freestlye again approximately 6 months ago and I tried the process explained in the book and it worked great! Before I bought this book, I studied the Freestyle stroke process by viewing numerous You Tube videos and NONE of them explained the swim stroke how it was explained in this book, and it works great! The nourishment and breathing techniques are also real helpful for exercise! I would highly recommend this book!

A great workout book...

In a world that is full of people and books telling you the best way to work out, this is the only book you need if you want functional fitness and strength. I mean, what better example is there of peak fitness and strength than that of a Navy SEAL?You CAN use it if you are a complete beginner, but you would likely need to dial back some of the routines and perhaps extend them to get your body used to these kinds of workouts.Stew Smith is a former SEAL and has trained and prepped countless military recruits and emergency service personnel, so he knows his stuff. You will need to provide some input when implementing the program, and while it does have a section on training nutrition, it is not a do-it-for-me book when it comes to managing your life outside of the training program.I admire the conditioning and resolve of military and emergency services personnel, and I think that having a level of fitness that is even on the same road as a Navy SEAL is the best kind of fitness there is.

Written by an experienced professional

If youre going for a career in the military, currently serving or even a fitness enthusiast this book is great. This book is written by Stew Smith an ex-navy SEAL.I started looking at some of his material online and decided to go for the book.It takes you through warmups, stretches, nutrition to 30 day, 4 week intermidiate and the 12 weeks BUD/s working. If you follow the workouts you'd find it a doddle to do over 150 pushups, 300 situps and over 50 pullups in one workout. As stated in another review this book is not for the faint hearted, if you want to get in top pyhsical condition, then get this book.
