Beast of a lens.

What a lens. This is my go to for street, portrait, sport, and events. 35-150 is such a huge range and it’s sharp at all levels. Auto focus is great except when it’s within about 6 feet, it will keep bouncing around even though it’s not at its minimum focal range. This is something I also noticed with the tamron version. One other thing is the creep, it does creep for sure. But ever since I put a rubber band (like a wrist band) I have not had a problem. The band has never fallen off either. It’s been a great lens.

Every bit as good as the Tamron, if you get a good copy

I’ve had two copies of this lens. One excellent copy that was sharp at all focal lengths and all apertures and another copy that was unusable beyond 110mm without stopping down to f4.0 and not totally sharp until f5.6. So do not hesitate to send the lens back for exchange or refund if your copy is of unsatisfactory sharpness, because there are some excellent copies out there.Beyond sharpness, the focus is snappy. About 95% as good on my A7iii as the Tamron 70-180 with the VXD motors. All of the focus modes and features work great. I use this to take photos or people with continuous AF across the whole frame and face/eye detection and it works as well as my Tamron 70-180 for that purpose, with the added benefit of going wide enough for general photography. I will note that this lens doesn’t seem to get all the way out to 35mm, probably more like 37mm. It is slightly narrower than the Samyang 35mm f2.8.Aberrations are well controlled and so is distortion. No need to correct unless you are doing architecture photography. My only complaint is that it is a heavy lens, particularly on the small A7iii body. It’s fine for an hour or two of event or sports shooting; certainly lighter than the traditional 70-200 f2.8 lenses, but noticeably heavier than the Tamron 70-180, which is incredibly light. I have not yet had a chance to take it on vacation, but I’m not sure that I’d want to carry it around all day.I’d also like to find a tripod collar if anyone has any suggestions!

💥 Was my favorite lens, but it broke... hello Tamron 👋

This lens WAS an absolute game changer, however I encountered something that I haven't seen others having issues with. I used this lens for about a month and a half, didn’t drop it or bang it… and the lens randomly stopped zooming at 70mm, so my range was only 35-70.... which doesn't make sense to me. No drops, dings, or any abuse. Only thing I can think of is maybe something rattled loose on the long flight back home across the country? Contacted samyang and they apparently knew the issue I was having right away which makes me think that this has happened (often?) before.I also noticed that within the 1.5 month of using it, a spec of dust made its way in towards the front element, which made it impossible to get out without sending it back to be professionally serviced.I was outside my return window and couldn’t afford the time away from it for servicing, as this lens’s abilities has become something I now can’t live without. Thankfully Amazon honored the return. I will bite the bullet and shell out a little extra coin to get the Tamron instead…Tamron is arguably slightly sharper depending on the version you receive (Samyang has quality control issues that vary between lenses), better chromatic aberration, 0.3lbs lighters, better autofocus (especially while zooming, the Samyang was terrible maintaining focus through zooms), no lens sag/creep when pointed towards ground (nd filters/diffusion filters make the samyang even worse), better lens flaring, cleaner rounder bokeh and a far better warrantee with Tamron at 6years in the US… You get what you pay for.I have read one review that dust will still find its way into the Tamron, but with a warrantee like that, I can afford to send it out during the off seasons if I encounter any issues.Because I’ve fallen head over heels in love with this lenses focal lengths and abilities, I have left it on my camera since I got it… until sending it back. But knowing how often it will be used and cherished, I know that the extra money spent towards the Tamron can be justified.Would have easily given this a better rating had it held up, but with it breaking out of nowhere and even the little dust that got in there within no time at all, I leave this review as a warning to those who are in a serious debate on whether or not to go with Tamron. This has the potential to be your new favorite lens with it’s focal lengths and low aperture, but if you wind up loving it as much as I did, you’ll be happy you waited and spent a little more.

Great optics but 2 drawbacks

Looks great, but lens extends with gravity if not locked (and why lock a zoom lens when in use?). Also, you have to buy a separate $40 device to update the firmware (otherwise AF is spotty).

Bought as an Amazon resale item at a significant discount.

Item was rated as like new, and as far as I can tell, it is. Center to edge sharpness is great with fast focussing, so I believe my copy lives up to all the rave review accolades this lens has received since its introduction a few years ago. Note it is a big heavy lens built like a tank, but its 2.8 aperture mandates this.

Zoom in stuck suddenly

I recently buy it, just one problem, the zoom in stuck suddenly, with the unlock button off, so I read on forums that some buyers have the same problem, I returned it to Amazon and request a new one, And I hope that this one comes good.

Great universal lens

I was cautious buying it given negative reviews, but I had good luck with Samyang lenses and price is good.. I am glad I bought it. If it was my first lens I would probably not need other lenses. I bought this lens for upcoming trip and shot it for a couple of days. Autofocus is instant and almost inaudible. Pictures are sharp. With f2.0-2.8 this lens is plenty fast and camera has no trouble focusing in low light. I did not notice any zoom creep. 35mm is perfect for limited space indoors. Although at longer end it is not really telephoto and doesn't give great rich, it is almost twice the focal length of my 85mm 1.4, so bokeh is creamy and bokeh balls do not have too much "cat eye" distortion. See the pictures. I am really happy with my purchase and think Samyang well deserves 5 stars for this product.
