Excellent Prep for RHCSA Certification; No RHCE Coverage This Time

I have been picking up Ghori’s Linux RHCSA/RHCE training book for every edition since RHEL 5 (when the RHCSA cert was the RHCT instead), so this edition makes this the fourth book I have picked up in the series. Typically his books are well-suited for reference in addition to being good for certification preparation which is the primary reason I prefer his to Jang’s certification books. This is another good book in the series, though there has been a significant – and unpleasant – change this time around.I will get right to the main complaint I have with this book. Instead of covering the RHCSA and RHCE exams, this one only covers RHCSA prep and does not cover RHCE at all. This is not the only title that avoids RHCE coverage and I am not sure why this is the case. I am hopeful that the RHCE exam will be covered by a later work, though it isn’t guaranteed. With no RHCE coverage, the cost of the volume has not appreciably changed which is a bit concerning. This book is very typical of Ghori’s previous editions and takes a deep dive into RHEL 8 and the exam requirements for the RHCSA exam. It walks you through installation, basic command execution, SELinux basics, file systems, services, the firewall, user management, package management and so much more. Though the emphasis is on exam preparation, it is perfectly adequate for use as a handy reference and it is a great book to have on hand if you are a system administrator who is trying to fine tune a system and get it ready for basic production use.As in previous editions, the author includes a short quiz at the end of every chapter to test knowledge learned. Some of the questions asked are somewhat remedial and seem less important than some of what you’d expect to find on the exam while other questions are much more geared towards knowing bits of information that are very relevant and will help when taking the test. Also included are “challenge labs” that are designed to give the reader things to accomplish with the goal of being well-prepared for the exam. Finally, there are practice exams that are similar in form to the actual exam. The practice exams in previous editions were a bit more verbose and wordy, which was inconsistent with the actual test, whereas the exam tasks seem much more in line with the exam format now. When preparing for the exam, do the labs – all of them, even the simple ones. You’ll be well-prepared when you take the test.A lot has changed since RHEL7, and this book is a good resource for gearing up for the RHCSA exam. It bothers me that RHCE prep has been removed without a significant impact on the cost of the book, but otherwise this is an excellent resource if you’re wanting to gear up for the RHCSA exam for RHEL 8.

Great book but damaged during shipping

The overall format and guidance in the book are outstanding. There is a step by step instructions that can be followed by a beginner or a pro with RHEL. The covers alot of the fundamentals that you need to get your RHCSA with a little bit of practice. The only downside is how amazon packed this book left a huge permanent dent / groove in the cover and first few pages of the book. Really looks awful with the rest of my Manuals and guides that are in good condition.

Read This Before Buying

Sooooo..... I bought the paperback book first, and OK... It's alright to take into the bathroom for some lengthy reading however, I ended up buying the Kindle version later. To me... What is crucial with this book is the Practice Exams. In my opinion, being able to use the "find" search function to locate a specific exercise to help with a task on the practice exam is much better than flipping pages back and fourth. So in my opinion... Kindle is better and cheaper. Don't be like me kids..... Just buy one book.... Be cool, stay in school!

Excellent reference book and resource for getting your RHCSA

This is an outstanding reference book for passing the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam. This was my primary source for study and I passed with flying colors yesterday. This book is also great for new Linux users wanting to learn Linux administration. The chapters review the basic concepts and then provide recipes in the form of exercises to accomplish key system administration tasks. Four sample RHCSA exams are provided at the end of the book offering you a chance to test your skills. Get this book now if you're new to Linux or are wanting to become a Red Hat Certified System Administrator.

Great way to study!

I used this as my primary resource to study for the exam, and I passed this morning. The format of this book is great in that you'll never go too many pages without having a hands-on exercise. Do the exercises along and the practice exams in the back of the book over and over until you feel very comfortable with the material and you'll have no problem passing the exam. The only parts of the exam I had trouble with involved the objectives recently added to the test that are not covered in this book.

Good content, but weird underlining

So far so good, the content seems great! However I too think it’s odd that there appears to be sloppy underlining/circling in a brand new book. Though when I zoom in with my camera I can see that the sloppy notes are in the printing (not added after the fact with a pen). These oddly placed underlinings are here and there throughout the book, but not enough to seem intentional.

2 Chapters In

So I just wrapped up chapter 2. Loving the book, I had a little Linux experience back in the early 2k's but nothing since. I like that way the book helps you setup and use free software for preparation and the explanations seem to be well done with a little practice at the end. If the results end as well as I feel, I will be looking for a EX300 study guide from Asghar.

Passed RHCSA 8

This is a great book on RHEL 8. I used this book extensively to prepare for the RHCSA exam and passed it successfully yesterday. 04 Sample exams given at the end of the book are really very important. Do those exams as many times as possible for at least a week before the actual exam, it will really help.
