Q: I'm clearly missing something. I can't seem to separate the inside liner from the interior rose? Any attempts with a screw driver bends the metal??

I puzzled with this, too, and requested a return label. Then I found the solution that quickly worked on every rose, on each side, every time. Take one side of the handle mechanism and place it handle down on a piece of wood. Look from the INSIDE at the inner liner. Along the edge are two small rectangular cutouts that are on opposite sides of the inner liner. There is no marking on the rose where these are located. (Ignore the little friction notches visible on the outside of the rose.) Take something blunt, like a large flathead screwdriver head, and while holding the entire mechanism steady, press the edge of the rose down into the rectangular indent. It's barely 1/8 inch deep. Repeat on the opposite side - 180 degrees across. Doing this should release the friction notches in the outer rose just enough for the rose to twist in your hands and ease off the liner. And if you need to remove the roses after the handles are installed on the door, it's relatively easy, because then you CAN use the visible friction notches to easily pry off the rose - because the liners are fastened to the door, you'll be able to get the necessary leverage.

Q: How do you get the inside liner and interior rose to connect?

The outside plate is just decorative. I had a hard time separating them but there is a little notch you can use a screwdriver to separate them. Once you have separated the cover piece screw together the main pieces and then put the cover on. Add the Handel piece after.
