Zentangle Sourcebook: The Ultimate Resource For Mindful Drawing

Lovely new Zentangle book!
I have been a fan of Jane's since I first discovered the Zentangle method. Her book "Zentangle: The inspiring and mindful drawing method" was my first book (and certainly not my last!). I like this new release very much! It features 76 of the most popular tangles giving each a two-page spread. Each tangle is matched with a string (76 in all as well) - the blank string is pictured along with a completed tile that combines the featured tangle with complimentary tangles. It is a great mix of step-outs, strings, and inspiration! There is a brief (but complete) "Getting Started" section in the front of the book. This book would make a wonderful introduction to Zentangle - it is a nice compact size that would look wonderful in a gift basket with some basic supplies. Although I already have a lot of these tangles in other books, I don't have anything else that shows such a variety of strings. I'm so glad I ordered this!

Very happy with this book
January 16, 2024I'm really pleased with the way this seller Goodwill of Texas packaged and shipping my purchase for this "Zentangle Source Book". Their price was very reasonable and the book was in excellent like new condition.

Good book to have despite being fragile
I've been wanting this book for a while and finally bought it. I don't regret the purchase since it's about 157 pages of patterns. There's a few tried and true patterns you find in every book, Tipple, Flux, Hollibaugh, etc. as well as quite a few lesser known patterns. Each comes with step-out instructions, a string pattern and a completed tile. She also names the other patterns used in the tile. (see photo)In the beginning of the book there's a brief instruction on how to do this craft, where it began, and where to find other patterns and string ideas (who knew there were official string patterns? Found at tanglepatterns.com hosted by Linda Farmer, CZT) .On the whole, I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The one problem I have is that the pages aren't glued in that well. I've had the book for one day and already the pages are separating (see photo) so I took star of got that. I can see having to put this in a binder at some point.

Great source book chock full of great tangles
I use this book all the time. There are so many examples and instructions in this book. Every page is full of ideas with step by step illustrations making learning new tangles a breeze. One of the best source books I have ever seen.

This is a great resource book
This is a great resource book. Offers lots of usable zentangle patterns and explains how to do the "strings" that help you make more complicated designs. Gives you lots of example of different "strings" you can use. Love the size - smaller than 8x11 because it easily fits into my take and go bag (a makeup bag/container) that I hold my supplies in - the book fits in the back and I can still zip it up.

Ok reference if you are of intermediate skill level
There’s a nice mix of tangles in the book, and each has an example tile with other tangles to see how they mix. However, being a new tangler I really wish the step outs had been drawn better, I found they were not drawn with much precision which makes trying to learn the steps challenging for some of the step outs. All and all I wish I had purchased a different book.

Worth purchasing.
I’ve bought several Zentangles books. Second to the original one I bought, The Joy of Zentangle, this is one of the best. Many of the other books are filled with pages with blank tiles to practice on… Filler as far as I’m concerned. This one has good information on Zentangling, then several pages which are a kind of index of all the tangles presented in the book, and then many pages of tangles in alphabetical order. There were many I had not seen before.

This book is all you need to understand zentangle and make amazing art!
From what I can gather about zentangle, this is written by the person who actually started the movement. I was impressed with the book, but I was also impressed with the attitude behind the book. They have links to zentangle freebies and all sorts of ways to get involved with even more than what this one book has to offer.I had not tried zentangle before I got this book but it gives excellent directions and is super easy to follow. I think anyone could learn how to make unique and beautiful art from this book. They suggest working on what they call 'tiles' and I found this kind of off-putting when I was shopping for a zentangle book because it seemed pointless and complicated. After trying it I can understand why they suggest it, but honestly working in any sketch book is just fine! So don't let the 'tile' thing get in the way. You also don't need special pens or anything else that's sold as an add on. I think that those things can augment the drawing, but I think you can start with any pencil or pen and have a decent experience before deciding what 'extras' might suit your personal style.I ended up deciding that the colors and the concept of shade were something that I wanted to bring into my own zentangles but you can do them in black and white or any other color for that matter. You could use printer paper if you don't have a sketch book and it is actually really simple to do and learn.I found this to be a wonderful way to meditate without all the doctrine that usually comes with meditation. It's neat that they encourage you that you can't really do anything wrong and to not worry about erasing errors, just find a way to make it part of the picture. Before I got this book I found the whole zentangle thing to be incomprehensible but now I totally get it and it's very cool. You can use your designs on card stock or other things to give as gifts and it gives you a whole new vocabulary of doodles and lines to express yourself in other art as well. Some of the patterns reminded me a lot of quilt patterns and other things that are historical, others are like plants or just a pattern that someone noticed and was adopted into the family of zentangle.Whether you want to improve as an artist or just chill out this is a good book and I think the best one for getting your toes wet in the zentangle world. All you actually need to get started is the book and that's cool too because it's highly affordable way to get into an art form and a meditation.

inspiring!
I'm so glad I bought this book. It's really good value for the price. It has clear instructions for each design and then ideas for others to include in a tangle.
