Question 1

Will this work for my miniature poodle? He's about 10 lbs but he has rather long legs for a small dog.

It may work great for a 10lb dog. My boston terriers are 17lbs and 23lbs and they fit fine. I found it quite difficult to use this tub though. The Pet Gear Pup-Tub would only fit in our bathtub. It also slid around a lot in the tub. It was really difficult to drain the tub if my dog was still in the tub. But, I really wanted to be able to stand while washing our dogs. So, I threw it away. I ended up purchasing a run-of-the-mill storage crate/tub to fit in our utility sink. I put foot traction stickers (sold for human bath tubs) on the bottom of the storage tub so my dogs didn't slip around. I bought a sprayer faucet for utility sinks and voila. The storage crate/tub dimensions was tough to find for the utility sink though. But now I don't have to bend down in our bathtub.

Is this really 30 x 18 x 9 or is it 28.5 X 17 X 8.5?

The overall length is closer to 28.5 & width 17.  The sidewalls vary from 7 to 9.  The wall where the drain plug is measures 7" & the opposite side is 9".  It is tapered, so the bottom...where the dog sits....measures 17x11 approximately, when I tip it upside down & measure that way.

Is this tub big enough for an 85 pound German Shepherd?

This is a great tub, however, I think that the tub is too small for your German Shepherd.

Could this be used for a toddler who can sit on his own?

I have a 3 yr old grandchild and I think he would be way to big for it. He's a little long in the leg, but I would not use it for him.  When he was 1 or 1.5, maybe I would have tried it then...if I had not already used it form my poodle. (Just squeamish ;-)R. Jenkins made two good points: 1.  It is smooth & slick on the sitting surface and with a little soap, there goes baby!  This problem, though, could be solved by sitting the child on a wash cloth.2. It could tip, depending on where the center of gravity falls, no pun intended.  Of course, while no one would leave a toddler alone for even 2 seconds, I'm not certain a slippery child would be easily managed--especially if you set the tub in the bathtub.  The drain would be its best feature for this use.  Personally, I think I would look elsewhere keeping the two above points in mind.
