Japanese English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Visual Dictionaries) Paperback – May 2, 2011

I've been studying Japanese for four years at a University and after returning from a year abroad in Japan I started giving private lessons to students of all ages. I buy a lot of books on Japanese and despite the fact that I've accumulated so many Japanese books over these years, this book really stands out! This dictionary has not only made a wonderful resource for me but has also been really useful in teaching vocab to my students. They like the pictures and can easily equate the Japanese word to the picture without having to think too much about the English word. The different topics on each page also make it easy to teach all of the words that someone may need to talk about that topic. I really like the organization of the dictionary.The only thing that I do not like is that the vocab with the pictures is really general. What I mean is that there aren't really any pages that talk about just Japanese things. In this dictionary, Japanese things are just put in the notes at the bottom of some pages and don't include pictures of those things. It would be nice to have a page with pictures about the words for different Japanese foods, like takoyaki or okonomiyaki, or things around a Japanese home, like chopsticks or kotatsu. Other than that, I do really like this book and would recommend it to beginners and to people that have been studying Japanese a while.

While living in Japan for 7 years, first as a soldier and later as a DAC employee I learned to speak Japanese and occasionally acted as interpreter so this helps me look up words I may forget from lack of use.

Compact and easy to use. Love that it has pictures. Bought this for my son and he enjoys it.

I'm a beginner/intermediate Japanese student, so I picked up this book as a good reference/vocabulary builder to look through. The pictures and common themes that the words are grouped under make this dictionary much easier to read through than your standard dictionary. The different sections (like "food," "anatomy," and "shopping") both let you learn related words, and let you take on the book in "chunks," like mini lessons. Unfortunately, while it's got tons of words, it relies too much on English cognates and katakana (the Japanese alphabet for foreign words). For example, "boru" instead of "chawan" or "donburi" for bowl, "penisu" instead of "inkei" for penis; "tipotto" instead of "kyusu" for teapot," "burifukesu" instead of "kaban" for briefcase/business bag; "boifurendo/garufurendo" instead of "kareshi/kanojo" for boyfriend/girlfriend, are the first few I noticed while thumbing through. The book still provides a good foundation for common items you'll likely encounter if you're traveling to Japan, and it's easier to remember familiar sounding words, and native speakers might understand what you're trying to say, you will sound very "foreign." There's definitely some good translations mixed in with the bad, but be sure to cross-reference another dictionary, and maybe a language app that connects you with native speakers, if you're determined to sound more like a native speaker.

Well, during many years I studied the Chinese language. Today, moving my residence I had time to think of the Chinese vocabulary I have - (called by the japanese people has Kanji) - what means Chinese letters ( actually words ). Then I compared my Han Zi ( Kanji ) and discovered I could understand many of them and decided to jump to japanese language - at least a little... Throughout Amazon I discovered this book - plus the 'Japanese through Manga'. Both perfect for my intentions as a beginner! Visual bilingual I already new for I have the chinese-english one. Excellent! But my surprise was with the ' Manga's one"> terrific! They discovered a way of teaching the hard japanese grammar in a light way. Wisely an very, very professionally: not scaring students with many many conjugations and grammar terms, etc. No! All is little by little explained in a friendly way. > As for the Visual I believe everyone that want to have a japanese word - without having to search in a dictionary every moment - it is wonderful, for through well printed photos you can have any subject with the japanese way of writing, since the sillabary hiragana, katakana and the beautiful kanjis until the soft touch of a brilliant paper. I too would love to have the "search inside" of it...but.........Now I see it was worth buying such a good companion ( both the books: The japanese-english bilingual Visual dictionary and the Japanese the Manga Way) Perfect for a japanese language beginner! Buy and learn! Believe me:learn laughing.

Like other "dictionaries" in this series, this is a very useful collection of everyday vocabulary. It is not really a dictionary proper, but rather a vocabulary builder of sorts. It is especially useful for intermediate and advanced students who have a strong command of grammar but need to build a rich, functional lexicon for everyday life. The basic vocabulary for science, health, and the natural environment is especially useful, and it is exactly this sort of vocabulary that textbooks -- even advanced books -- usually lack. Words like walrus, sea horse, stratosphere, and granite may seem inconsequential, but every native English speaker would know them, and if you ever want real functional fluency in Japanese (or any foreign language), you MUST know this sort of vocab in that language. This is one of the only books I know that is organized thematically and brings thousands of these kind of words together in one place. The thematic organization makes it MUCH easier than simply trying to read through a traditional English-Japanese dictionary, whose entries are of course arranged alphabetically. Portable, comprehensive, highly useful, and fun -- definitely a good investment!

I use this as part of teaching my kid Japanese; the app is very nice, with native speakers as opposed to the often horrible AI-voices these days.I only wish for some more "casual social interactions", standard phrases are provided in the back and not much of it. Finally, a search for words/phrases in the app would be nice, instead to solely rely on page numbers and the favorites.All in all, a great tool to help teaching the young ones.

I took it with me everywhere! I don’t speak Japanese but I was able to point to the book or say the thing that I needed from it and it worked every time! And honestly it’s just a well done book the app to go with it is super helpful too...

Super outil d'apprentissage, très complet et très bien réalisé avec en prime une application mobile qui permet d'avoir la prononciation des mots. Le dictionnaire étant en anglais il permet aussi au passage de travailler son anglais!
