Great all-rounder
The gloves are definitely great for what they are made for- as a blacksmith, I use them for virtually all my hot work; they are undoubtably superior to deerskin work gloves- which while supple and easy to manipulate tools in, permit far too much heat to pass through and are easily penetrated by even a few light strikes against a belt or grinder. Unlike welding gloves, which offer extraordinary heat insulation, they are comfortable to work in for long periods of time, and offer enough freedom of motion and space between the fingers to comfortably hold and manipulate tongs and hammers for long hours. I love the way that abrasions and strikes against the grinder, or even high temperature burns, just remove a layer of cotton and reveal more cotton webbing underneath- And as they absorb grease and soot, they seem to have an improved grip on tools. My complaints are few-when the gloves are brand new, they are very easy to get waterlogged. This must NOT be allowed to happen if you are going to do more hot work. The first time I dumped a piece into my slack tub with a fresh pair of gloves on, the gloves got wet and several fingers were almost instantly flash boiled! *That* was fun ;) The elastic on the wrist is very loose and gets looser with time, which tends to permit sparks and hot stuff to occasionally float past your wrist and into the glove. The first downside is a warning; the second is something that I can deal with, considering the low-cost and high volume of these gloves. Also, spark down your wrist is pretty much a fact of life when blacksmithing in *any* glove, so..They definitely do not last quite as long as a pair of leather work gloves, but if doing hot work and grinder work, you will blow through a pair of $15 leather gloves in just about the same amount of time that you will start to open up holes in the thumb and forefinger of these mill gloves-and they cost a fraction of a fraction of the price. Overall, for hot work, blacksmithing, and blade smithing, I would call them and all around godsend.
